During the Muromachi period (1336-1573), Yixing teapots made their way to Japan, with their influence extending into the Meiji period (1868-1912). It was in the Edo period (1603-1867) that the distinctive Yokote teapot emerged. The Yokote teapots found today were created after this period, eventually establishing themselves as the quintessential Japanese tea containers, earning the name kyusu (teapot). Tokoname is celebrated as one of Japan's six oldest kilns, with a rich pottery tradition that spans over a millennium.
Tokoname-yaki 常滑焼 stands as one of the six ancient kilns in Japan, situated in a city famed for its deep-rooted pottery culture. This time-honored craft traces its origins to one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, with Tokoname-ware being a notable variety of ceramic pottery produced in the Tokoname area of Aichi prefecture.
This teapot features a finely crafted mesh strainer designed to keep tea leaves contained, ensuring that the tea strainer maintains its effectiveness regardless of how the tea leaves are positioned within the kyusu.
Kyusu (急須) are traditional Japanese teapots made primarily from premium fired volcanic clay. While the term "Kyusu" translates to teapot, it is commonly understood to refer to a teapot with a side handle.
